The Internet of Things (IoT) is another technology now combined with ERP systems. ERP data analysis does not take place only in applications. External devices that collect data from different areas in real time and send it to the ERP system are equally important, allowing the work of the entire company to be optimized. In a manufacturing environment, for example, IoT devices can collect data on machine performance and raw-material consumption and identify areas requiring improvement. IoT in ERP is also important to the supply chain. Efficient logistics determines a company’s success, so deploying IoT sensors that monitor transport conditions such as temperature and humidity, as well as product locations, supports more effective management of the entire process. Sensors in machines and equipment also monitor their technical condition, enabling failures to be detected early. IoT in ERP is valuable in data analysis too: sensors are often the first to indicate abnormalities, supporting better equipment-maintenance planning and optimized maintenance schedules. They can also provide another barrier in the system protecting both the company and its data. Sensors and cameras can supply information on workplace safety, while identifying potential hazards enables preventive action. As these examples show, ERP systems can—and should—be integrated with different technologies.
