Companies in niche industries are characterized by their small reach, high specialization, and less competition than in mass markets—examples include manufacturers of luxury mechanical watches or medical equipment for specific conditions, as well as artisans and ERP software specialists. So, what can representatives of niche industries gain from automation? Primarily, they can increase their efficiency by, for example, eliminating routine tasks through RPA implementation, which in turn can translate into lower operating costs. Another benefit is improved consistency, which is crucial for products that must meet stringent standards, such as medications or cochlear implants. Another advantage of process automation in niche industries can be increased operational safety, as it eliminates the need for humans to perform dangerous tasks. This is also significant in the context of data—integrating it, for example, into an ERP system, not only increases security levels but also accelerates the analysis process, as there is no need to switch between different programs.    

Challenges associated with automating niche processes

  Although automation in niche industries can significantly streamline daily operations, it comes with certain challenges. First and foremost, it must be remembered that highly specific industries operate on a lower cost scale than, for example, food producers, so the initial costs of implementing automation technologies can be difficult for niche companies to absorb. Another problem arises with integration—because niche industries often use niche technological solutions, integrating new systems with existing processes and technologies can be complex. It can also be problematic that niche industries often lack standards and general technological solutions, which can make it difficult to find the right automation tools. One must also not forget that processes in niche industries can be complex, which may hinder full automation and require significant time and resources. Companies operating in niche industries must also face the same challenges as global corporations that have decided on business process automation – primarily, employee resistance to change. In the case of highly specific sectors, reluctance toward automation may be greater due to the high specialization of the work.

  Despite certain challenges and difficulties that companies may encounter while implementing automation solutions, there is no doubt that automation leads to, among other things, more effective time management, as shown by examples from various industries, including niche ones. One of these is automation in vineyards, where, for example, automated systems can be used for precise management of bottling and packaging. Successful automation implementations in niche industries are also visible in the medical sector. An example is the company Össur, which specializes in the production of prosthetics. It applied automation technologies to the molding and assembly of prosthetics, which allowed for maintaining high quality and manufacturing precision, as well as increasing production speed. Another example of niche industry automation is the company John Deere, which produces agricultural machinery and precision farming equipment. Thanks to the automation of certain functions, farmers using John Deere products were able to increase crop yields and optimize fertilizer and water consumption.    

Is automation the future for all industries?

  As shown in the examples above, the automation of niche processes is capable of elevating companies operating in specific industries to new levels of efficiency. But is automation the future for all sectors? There is no simple answer to this question, as the effectiveness of automation processes is influenced by dozens of factors. The first is the type of business—it is definitely easier to automate repetitive processes, which is why automation is most often implemented in manufacturing companies or customer service. However, in the case of niche activities where business processes cannot be clearly defined and which require high levels of creativity or an individual approach, automation may miss the mark due to the complexity of the operations. Another factor is cost—often in the case of niche industries, it may turn out that the profits from automation, even in the long term, will be lower than sticking to the currently used processes. This is also linked to technological development, industry standards, and legal regulations—it is definitely easier to automate processes that are defined and used in many places (e.g., warehousing) than activities that require high attention and are non-standardized (e.g., watchmaking).
