Using cloud technology has become a part of everyday life. Storing data in an external source offloads hardware, improves resource management, and boosts work efficiency. While private users have long utilized the cloud, its importance in the enterprise sector has grown significantly in recent years. How is the future of cloud solutions taking shape? All signs point to the coming years being another period of cloud revolution.

What are cloud solutions?

The term “cloud solutions” can be used synonymously with terms like cloud computing or simply the cloud. It refers to a data processing model and service that allows for data storage and access from any location and device. Users do not need to own the infrastructure, as it is provided by a cloud service provider responsible for performance and security. What does the cloud look like? It is an interconnected network of servers where data is stored, along with the devices (e.g., laptops or smartphones) connected to them. The infrastructure can be located in a few rooms of a single building, but it works just as well when devices are scattered across the globe. Implementing cloud solutions in a company requires a proper strategy. More and more enterprises are becoming cloud native, which means they are starting to use cloud computing and cloud-based applications for their daily operations. Data is also stored in the cloud, which reduces costs and is functional for employees who have access to resources from anywhere.

What are the types of clouds?

Cloud solutions for businesses are diverse and can be tailored to the needs of a given enterprise. There are three main types of clouds:

  • private – belonging to the organization that is both the user and the owner or lessee of the necessary infrastructure; also known as an internal cloud;
  • public – in this case, the user does not own the infrastructure but uses external infrastructure owned by a provider; examples of such clouds include Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure;
  • hybrid – combining the features of private and public clouds; some tasks are performed in the private part, while others use the resources of external providers.

Cloud computing can operate in one of several possible models. The most common are:

  • IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service), which involves providing virtual hardware resources;
  • PaaS (Platform as a Service), where the provider gives the client a development environment with a complete set of applications for their use;
  • SaaS (Software as a Service), which means the client has access to software of their choice.

It is also worth mentioning an increasingly common solution known as multicloud. In this model, the computing power of more than two types of cloud computing platforms is used. In multicloud systems, different cloud operating models can be combined – everything depends on the client’s needs and the service provider’s capabilities. This type of strategy provides greater flexibility and scalability than using services from, for example, only one provider.

What are the predictions for the future of cloud solutions?

Cloud technologies are developing more and more intensively. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced a shift to a remote work model and digitization almost overnight, was significant. Although this accelerated the progress of cloud solutions, advantages such as ease of access, flexibility, and scalability were already recognized earlier. One area where the future of cloud solutions looks bright is Robotic Process Automation. Companies are recognizing the benefits of Cloud RPA, which combines, among other things, ERP systems and artificial intelligence with cloud computing. This allows for the creation of a high-security infrastructure that is easy to use for people without programming knowledge and provides fast access to data. It is expected that cloud solutions will become more widespread due to lower energy consumption. Sharing servers among multiple entities and virtualizing processes in companies significantly reduce the carbon footprint and lead to less waste. Clouds will also be combined with technologies such as edge computing. This means that data and computing power will be located close to their source, which will not only speed up related processes but also result in faster performance and lower resource consumption. Another area where we should expect the development of cloud solutions is their integration with quantum computers. Quantum systems available in the cloud are already being used by scientists in the fields of cryptography and physics[1], but there is nothing stopping these same solutions from being applied in finance, risk management, or business process optimization.

Aspects driving the growing popularity of cloud solutions

Several factors contribute to the growing popularity of cloud solutions. The first is cost reduction. The lack of a need to maintain the necessary infrastructure and paying only for the server space actually used make companies increasingly willing to implement such solutions. Another aspect driving the popularization of clouds is the change in the work model. The shift to remote work requires free access to data from any location and device, which is a significant advantage of cloud solutions over other methods. The implementation of cloud-native strategies by companies has also contributed to the popularity of clouds. Cloud solutions are being used in an increasing number of industries also because of their ease of use. They are often used in conjunction with container technologies such as Kubernetes or Docker. Speed of implementation, simpler operation, and fewer resources required are factors that favor the popularization of these types of tools.

Performance, flexibility, and scalability as the advantage of cloud solutions

In the era of cloud native and cloud culture, cloud solutions are chosen for their ability to improve enterprise performance. As mentioned, cloud technologies often work in harmony with containers and software for managing them, such as Kubernetes. Their use allows for faster and easier application management, as well as better access to company data. Another advantage of cloud solutions over other data processing methods is their greater flexibility combined with scalability. Clouds can be used in both small and large organizations, freely adjusting their size and computing power to the current needs of the enterprise. Thanks to the cloud, a company does not have to buy physical data storage media when the amount of data increases – everything is handled by an external provider, which can scale the available space at the client’s request. Cloud solutions are easy to use and can be operated by people without a programming background. This is particularly visible in ERP system implementations, where all possible processes are digitized and robotized in such a way that the end user can adapt them to current conditions with minimal or no code.

Cloud solutions in the context of data security

The reliability of cloud solutions also speaks in their favor for businesses. It is the service provider’s duty to service and maintain the stability of the cloud, and they are also responsible for the state of the servers. Data and processes are constantly monitored, which allows for the quick and efficient detection of potential threats. To ensure the security of cloud solutions, a zero-trust architecture is often used, which assumes that every cloud user must be verified every time. Using this solution increases the level of data protection, enables secure communication between individual users, and blocks access for unverified devices. To provide even greater data protection in the cloud, data is encrypted and subject to constant control. In addition, cloud service providers monitor risk and change management, which allows for the detection of unusual behavior. Many of the security mechanisms used are automated and combined with machine learning, which allows for faster and more efficient control of all possible threats, as well as automatic prediction of problems.
