Threats of this type are particularly dangerous in cloud technology, so Disaster Recovery solutions can be helpful in avoiding them and mitigating their effects.

  Cloud computing and its implementation involve many challenges – one of the most important is the protection of personal data and maintaining business continuity. One might ask – what is the point of implementing cloud solutions if they do not ensure business data protection that complies with current regulations and secures operational activities? It is also worth remembering that according to Uptime Institute data, in 2022, 20% of companies experienced at least one serious outage over the previous three years. Fortunately, you do not need to use advanced technologies to ensure data security and business continuity. Disaster Recovery is often based on activities such as regular data backups and storing them in a secure place (i.e., secured with solutions compliant with ISO and industry standards; it is also worth storing them on drives without network access). It is also good to frequently test the data restoration process to ensure it remains effective. Business continuity is also ensured through proper risk management methods. To this end, the probability of threats occurring and their potential impact on business operations should be identified and assessed. It is also worth developing a plan and procedures in case of failure – this allows you to effectively minimize the impact of disruptions.

Disaster Recovery strategies in the cloud

It cannot be denied that despite using even the best security measures, the probability of data loss remains high – it is most often caused by oversights on the part of employees, so the most effective Disaster Recovery strategy remains team training in data security. This is all the more important because – as the ITIC report shows – in 2022, 60% of downtime was caused by human error. In addition, it is worth using strategies such as cross-region recovery – this is a strategy involving data replication between different cloud regions to ensure availability in the event of a failure in one region. Another possibility is to use tools for automatic workload migration between different availability zones or cloud regions if a failure is detected in one area. It is also worth regularly backing up the most important data and storing it in remote (and preferably network-isolated) locations. Virtual machine replication at various levels, i.e., between different data centers, availability zones, or regions, can also help with Disaster Recovery. It is also important to implement solutions that allow applications to run in parallel in several regions simultaneously – this minimizes downtime in the event of a failure in one of the regions.

Benefits and challenges of implementing DRaaS

Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) is available on many cloud platforms, and one of the most common reasons for its use is data protection – such solutions regularly create data backups, which ensures business continuity and an appropriate level of redundancy in the cloud. This is useful in the event of a failure in the primary environment. DRaaS is also valued for its flexibility and speed of restoration, which is possible thanks to the automation of procedures. As with other “as a service” solutions, DRaaS eliminates the need to manage resources and infrastructure yourself without reducing the level of control – the internal IT team can have access to platforms anywhere and at any time. Despite its advantages, Disaster Recovery as a Service also has its drawbacks. One of the basic ones is cost – although cloud solutions are generally cheaper than maintaining your own infrastructure, they can still be a financial burden. They also force a certain dependence on the provider – in the event of infrastructure problems, it is possible that data will be unavailable. It is impossible not to notice technical challenges, such as application compatibility or ensuring data consistency and synchronization between the primary and secondary environments. One must not forget about users – Disaster Recovery requires appropriate knowledge, so not only should procedures be tested regularly, but employees must also be trained.

Choosing the right cloud provider

What else is important in Disaster Recovery? Choosing the right cloud provider – there are a multitude of them on the market, and comparing their offers can be time-consuming. So how do you choose a cloud provider that fits the specifics of your business and offers DRaaS solutions appropriate for your industry? Just answer a few questions:
  • Does the cloud provider stand out for its service availability and reliability, certified by certificates and case studies?
  • Does it offer services in a sufficient number of regions and availability zones to ensure redundancy and prevent failures?
  • What security measures and security certificates does it use? Are they compliant with current regulations and industry standards?
  • Does it offer scalable solutions and allow you to adjust resource usage to current business needs?
  • What types of technical support does it offer, and are they tailored to the company’s specifics?
In addition, you should also pay attention to the price of cloud services and the payment models offered – the chosen solution should match the company’s financial capabilities, but a commonly used billing method is payment for consumed resources. Beyond financial issues, it is also worth checking opinions and references, especially from companies in your industry.

Examples of Disaster Recovery applications

Cloud computing has proven its usefulness in many aspects of business and is used, for example, as one of the methods for increasing production efficiency. However, it is safe to assume that many of the paeans in praise of cloud technologies would not have appeared if not for Disaster Recovery. It is worth asking – what exactly is it? It is easiest to explain with a few examples. Let’s assume that an online store has become the target of a DDoS attack, as a result of which neither users nor employees can use it, as they cannot transmit data due to network load. It cannot be ruled out that data will be lost as a result of the attack – this is where Disaster Recovery comes in. In the event of data loss, you can use a previously prepared backup. Another situation where Disaster Recovery proves its usefulness is data sabotage. It is easy to imagine that a competitor or a disgruntled employee could destroy or compromise the integrity of data – such a situation is not only a problem for operations but also serious damage to the company’s image. However, this can be avoided – firstly, thanks to backups, and secondly, thanks to storing backups in places not connected to the main network. The above examples do not exhaust the possibilities of Disaster Recovery, but they show that it will work in many situations and industries – it is used, among others, in the manufacturing industry, retail, or public administration.
