Cloud computing is an innovative technology that, while present in the IT world for over a decade, has only recently begun to be noticed by other sectors – including manufacturing. The growing potential of cloud computing means that companies theoretically unrelated to advanced IT systems are recognizing the potential to increase production efficiency. How?

How Cloud Computing accelerates production processes and reduces costs

According to experts, the manufacturing industry is one of the segments of the economy with the greatest potential for process improvement. It is no surprise, then, that industry pioneers are actively looking for ways to support change and transform a well-managed and efficient business toward Industry 4.0. This is where cloud computing comes in – well-known in the IT industry, yet still quite underestimated in manufacturing. The truth is, however, that innovatively introducing cloud computing technology into an industrial and manufacturing company guarantees huge improvements in practically every aspect of running a business. Let’s start at the beginning: planning. The process of planning new investments or projects in small companies is not very complicated. However, the larger the scale of operations, the greater the challenge of coordinating projects efficiently, especially when dealing with companies holding significant positions in international markets. In such a scenario, cloud computing technology significantly streamlines the process of communication, resource sharing, and global planning, while ensuring a uniform flow of data. A centralized approach to data, accessible to all employees or authorized personnel, serves as a starting point for optimizing production, improving warehouse and logistics processes, and increasing the potential of production lines, for example, by implementing software that supports the maintenance and repair of individual components. Despite concerns related to implementing advanced technology like cloud computing and the belief that it is a solution dedicated only to the largest companies in the industry, cloud computing will allow smaller businesses to unlock their potential as well, especially those specializing in a narrow range of products. Furthermore, a smaller company will not feel the organizational changes associated with implementing such a solution as acutely.

In which industries can the full potential of cloud computing be utilized?

At the moment, cloud computing is present in practically every industry. According to Deloitte analysis, more than 90% of companies that identify their market share as critical to their entire industry are already leveraging the potential of cloud computing. And this is not just about IT companies using the cloud to build native applications. It also includes manufacturing and industrial companies that base a number of business processes on cloud solutions. So, who is fully utilizing the potential of cloud computing? Companies that have already decided to migrate their processes from traditional to digital variants. The more resources we accumulate in the form of digital files, and the more employees use IT systems on a daily basis, the more cloud computing will demonstrate its usefulness and the more it can be utilized in daily operations. Industry and manufacturing gain quite a lot from cloud computing. We are increasingly witnessing a concept where local production processes are replaced by cloud processes, which are a necessary condition for operating in line with the Industry 4.0 strategy. Therefore, cloud computing will provide most manufacturing and industrial companies with full integration of production processes, guaranteeing dynamic growth in efficiency, among other things, through instant information exchange and the automation of many processes.

How much more efficient will production be after implementation?

It is difficult to state definitively to what extent we will increase the efficiency of production processes by implementing cloud solutions. Too many factors can influence the final effect of such an innovation. The scope of processes carried out digitally, the volume of digital resources, the specifics of business and production processes, as well as the service provider and its functionality – these are just a few of the actual factors affecting the final efficiency of the production process. However, what we can be sure of after investing in cloud computing is the potential for increased flexibility in operations without fear of losing previously achieved productivity. What we gain is improved communication and connectivity – with suppliers, customers, contractors, and other organizational units within our company. And this perspective provides the foundation for further improvements that will directly impact increased efficiency, whether through an ERP system or the automation of business processes. The scalability and flexibility of cloud computing technology is an opportunity to increase competitive advantage in the market. We still have a chance to harness the potential of this change before cloud computing becomes universally used across the entire manufacturing industry.
