In such a situation, it is beneficial to use technologies that allow for the rapid increase of, for example, production efficiency – one of the most commonly used is cloud computing. One of the most important features of cloud technology is on-demand scalability. It is used in, among other things, mobile cloud computing and P2P clouds (short for peer-to-peer, meaning a cloud where users share resources). On-demand scalability is simply the ability to dynamically adjust resources and disk space to meet user needs. The key to rapid responses to change and creating an agile business is automation. Many cloud functions operate without human intervention, and the use of solutions such as Infrastructure as Code (IaC) allows for managing resources, their replication, and updates in a short time using just a few commands. This process can also be easily automated through code changes. Another technical solution used in clouds that allows for scaling business operations is last-minute provisioning, which is the ability to quickly deliver new resources at the last moment. It allows for instantaneous reactions to load changes, increasing or decreasing resource availability as needed.

Cost reduction through flexibility – efficient resource utilization

Flexibility is a recurring theme in reports and analyses about the future of cloud computing. This should come as no surprise – cloud scalability is significantly greater than the scalability of physical private infrastructure, the expansion of which can take weeks rather than a few moments and clicks as is the case with clouds. This also affects organizational scalability, allowing the company to adjust computing power to its needs. Another reason for cost reduction when using the cloud (and one of the most frequently cited reasons for migration) is the flexible payment model. While cloud resources and computing power can be reserved, and one can pay, for example, a fixed monthly subscription, one of the most commonly used payment models is pay-as-you-go, meaning payment only for consumed resources. It is also worth noting that by using the cloud, you do not have to pay for infrastructure maintenance. Cost optimization in the cloud is also possible through the analysis of telemetry data. This allows for identifying and removing unnecessary resources, as well as areas where savings can be made. This helps effectively manage the resource lifecycle – for example, automatically starting instances at specific times not only optimizes costs but also positively impacts energy consumption.

Innovation and speed of deployment – how the cloud enables experimentation

Business agility can be built in many ways, and one of the most effective is experimentation. In the cloud, this is easier than when using your own IT infrastructure – in the latter case, it might be necessary to allocate part of the resources for various types of tests, which can involve expenses for, for example, hard drives or processors. In the cloud, such problems do not exist – you just need to request the resources to receive additional space in a few moments. Experiments are also encouraged by the fact that many cloud providers offer various functions within their services – organizations can not only store information in databases but also use artificial intelligence support, with which they can, for example, improve the performance of a chatbot used in an online store. Importantly, if experiments in an isolated environment yield positive results, their effects can be quickly implemented into daily operations. Many clouds are integrated with DevOps and CI/CD (short for continuous integration and continuous delivery) practices, which not only allows for implementing developed solutions in a short time but also enables the automation of the deployment and delivery process. The speed of deploying cloud solutions also stems from the serverless architecture often used in them. In this case, you can write code without having to manage infrastructure, and servers run it only when needed. Although there are countless trends in cloud computing, recent years have shown several of the most desired and simultaneously explored directions of development. The undisputed winner in this matter is artificial intelligence. Large language models and various types of software using machine learning have conquered many industries, from IT through logistics to marketing, so it should come as no surprise that they are also being developed in cloud computing, where AI is used, for example, in automation or big data analysis. Along with AI, the Internet of Things (IoT) is developing – many homes have smart speakers, more and more people use voice assistants, and buildings are full of sensors that automatically adjust, for example, humidity or temperature. All of this would not be possible without the development of cloud technologies, especially hybrid and mobile versions. The development of IoT is also indirectly linked to edge computing, which involves processing data at the edge of the network. This also would not be possible without the cloud. The future of the cloud is linked not only to technologies but also to organizational, social, and cultural changes. Businesses around the world are placing increasing emphasis on agility and striving for full digital transformation. Cloud computing allows for revolutionizing previously used business models, operational processes, and customer interactions without worrying about data security, and thanks to flexible payment models, more and more companies are deciding to take this step.
