Become an RPA developer. How to go about your career?

As mentioned in our previous texts, the difficult working conditions during the pandemic involving project management are not hindering technology development. The Robotic Process Automation (RPA) market is also growing steadily – Forrester estimates that by 2021, the RPA market will reach $2.9 billion. Automating repetitive, rule-based tasks and the comprehensive robotization of processes create new jobs, including new professions. One of the most in-demand vocations is RPA programmer, also known as RPA developer.

What is robotic process automation (RPA)?

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) allows the configuration of software program “robots” to mimic the actions of humans interacting with digital systems to perform a specific business process.

RPA robots use a user interface to capture data and operate applications and programs like humans. They interpret, trigger responses, and communicate with other systems to perform many repetitive tasks. Robots have a significant advantage: starting with the fact that they never sleep, too, most notably, for the work quality, they never make mistakes.

Implementing intelligent processes brings several benefits, as this article will explain.

What are the responsibilities of an RPA developer?

The primary duties of an RPA developer are to design, develop and deploy application robots or bots that collaborate with humans to make business processes more efficient. A typical day in a developer’s life includes interacting with representatives from various fields to understand their business challenges and to find ways to streamline processes by automating tedious tasks.

Business users find robotization through RPA attractive, as it frees up their time to work on more creative initiatives. The developer must, thus, study their needs and expectations for the entire process in detail to create effective automation solutions.

Therefore, their role requires understanding the process’s complexity to be automated and checking the feasibility and stability of the RPA solution in the particular use case. If it turns out that the automation can be implemented, then it is the developer’s job to design and develop the automated version of the process. It is also the developer’s responsibility to continue supporting and monitoring future bots.

What is the skill set required of an RPA developer?

To succeed as an RPA developer, you will need both logical thinking skills and programming knowledge. Remember that there are many ways to automate a process, and it is part of a developer’s job to choose the most optimal way. Patience is also a requirement, as you will likely encounter some challenges. The most common is getting the correct input data from clients and problems with the virtual machine’s memory.

Where should future RPA developers look for knowledge?

When reviewing potential courses, training, and studies, a future RPA developer should prioritize practical knowledge and look for the opportunity to interact with case studies embedded in the realities of specific organizations. Theoretical materials alone, even if developed by top technology partners, may not be enough for someone interested in getting an in-depth education in RPA.

Mindbox recommends the Business Process Automation course at the Faculty of Management at the University of Łódź, which was introduced in cooperation with our experts and six other organizations. In addition, we have also developed the Intelligent Process Automation Academy training course, where, as part of RPA Foundations, we prepare the participants to plan process automation in a specific company.
