Others, however, have tried entering the IT world without such competencies and now unanimously agree that it was a risk worth taking. How can you get into an IT company and work there without being a programmer?    

Working in the IT sector without programming skills – is it possible?

For many years, working in the IT industry has been perceived by the general public as the fulfillment of dreams regarding a promising career path, filled to the brim with new challenges, opportunities for growth, the chance to work in an international environment, and what is most important for many – high compensation. These features attract not only young people currently facing the choice of their career path but also those who have been active in the labor market for many years. However, are they a group of potential employees desired by the IT industry? Of course they are. Many people dreaming of changing their professional situation certainly give up on the potential of the IT industry prematurely. Lack of appropriate education. Minimal or even zero knowledge of programming. The barrier related to the lack of technical experience. Is this, however, a reason to actually scrap plans for a career change? By no means. The IT industry is developing and evolving more and more every year. New branches are constantly emerging, and not all of them require technical programming skills. For several years now, the IT industry has been opening up to people not associated with the industry or technical studies. Increasingly, the recruitment process takes other factors into account – soft skills, the ability to learn new things, competence in working in an international team, or analytical skills not strictly related to programming. This is a huge opportunity for people who may want to learn programming but want to land a job in IT a bit sooner. For such people, we propose an optimal solution – it is worth looking for a position in the IT industry that is not directly related to programming.

What positions should you look into?

Which IT professions do not require programming skills? Fortunately, a potential candidate for a career change has several interesting options at their disposal that can be treated as a great introduction to the world of modern technology. These are positions where no programming skills are required, although it is not excluded that they will be treated as an asset. As we know, in-depth knowledge of the industry and issues seemingly unrelated to a specific position proves that we are aware of many processes carried out in the industry and will be able to better adapt to a new reality. What positions should be the subject of our interest? First and foremost:

• UX/UI Specialist – A person responsible for ensuring that an application or website looks appropriate and is sufficiently functional, providing users with a positive user experience.
• Software Tester – A specialist whose task is to detect any errors in software. The position of a manual tester does not require any special skills – all that is needed is diligence, attentiveness, and the ability to take a critical approach to proposed solutions.
• Project Manager – A position reserved for people who have experience in managing a project team. Even in the case of IT projects, the main task of a project manager is to motivate employees, create an appropriate atmosphere, and monitor work results.
• Scrum Master – A person responsible for implementing and applying the principles of agile software development methodologies. This is the foundation of a team that carries out a project in sprints, in accordance with the Agile methodology.
• Business Analyst – A kind of bridge between the world of business and the world of IT. A business analyst is often responsible for contact with the client, defines client requirements, and becomes an important link in the team.

As you can see, the prospects for people involved in the IT industry who do not program are very high. Let us not forget about other positions such as system administrator or IT equipment service technician. Of course, each of the above-mentioned professions requires employees to have other, equally important competencies, which are acquired during studies, previous professional experience, and courses. However, none of the above positions requires us to know programming – a competence that requires time, patience, and enormous determination to learn.

Do you need to have a university degree?

Many people thinking about a career change and taking their first steps in IT are discouraged from making the decision due to a lack of a degree. However, employers today prioritize other candidate traits over education – soft skills, professional experience, and the potential to learn. Even in the absence of a degree, every candidate can improve their qualifications during shorter postgraduate studies or courses and workshops.Higher education institutions have long been investing in programs preparing people for the role of a Scrum Master or Business Analyst. This is a great way to gain appropriate qualifications, acquire new practical skills, and sell them effectively during a job interview, which may change our professional life. Do you need to have a degree? By no means. If we can offer our employer other important traits that bring added value to their organization, the lack of a specialized education should not block us from sending a CV to companies in the IT industry.
