When is an ERP system not worth optimizing?

There are situations in which ERP optimization may not be worthwhile. The clearest is when the cost of updates and improvements exceeds the potential benefit. This can happen when a company plans to replace the system with a newer one soon; resources are then better devoted to implementing the new solution. In small companies that do not plan rapid growth, modernization costs may bring little benefit, particularly when the present system already performs its basic functions adequately. A similar problem is a lack of internal resources, both technological expertise and enough employees to carry out the optimization. In companies with small IT teams focused on maintaining current infrastructure, unsupported ERP optimization can increase project risk. Businesses operating in a stable environment may likewise find optimization unnecessary: their existing system, although not technologically advanced, may be fully sufficient. Optimization may also be unjustified when the company cannot precisely identify the areas that need improvement and has not adequately defined its internal processes.
