Although the future of cloud solutions looks more than promising, regardless of the level of technological advancement and the widespread adoption of clouds in work environments, there are certain timeless challenges associated with resource management. Companies implementing cloud computing must always account for costs – however, expenses can be minimized by using scripts to automatically shut down unused resources and monitoring costs to identify savings opportunities. Another challenge in cloud resource management is platform security – this is particularly important for sensitive data. In this case, the solution can be regular audits, as well as implementing practices such as data encryption or the principle of least privilege. Managing resource scaling in response to changing business requirements can also be difficult. This can cause performance issues, which may lead to, for example, project delays or a decrease in application efficiency. These problems can be avoided by, first, using auto-scaling mechanisms, and second, containerizing applications. Continuous performance monitoring can also be helpful – this allows you to adjust cloud operations to the organization’s needs on an ongoing basis.

Monitoring the usage and efficiency of cloud resources

Monitoring cloud resources, such as CPU usage, RAM, disk space, and network bandwidth, helps detect unused or overloaded resources – tracking the number, size, and status of running instances can also be helpful in finding them. Inefficient areas can then be optimized through, for example, automating data collection or setting up alerts for excessive resource consumption. Analyzing the degree of cloud resource usage is particularly important for companies using a multicloud strategy, as it allows you to track resource usage across different cloud environments from a single location and combine data from various platforms to get a more complete picture. Tools such as Datadog, New Relic, and Dynatrace are used for this, but you can also use applications provided by cloud vendors or open-source software like Prometheus or Grafana. To effectively manage cloud resource usage, you must primarily review reports regularly to identify trends and potential issues. Based on this, you can take further actions, such as adjusting the size or type of instances or integrating monitoring tools with CI/CD pipelines.

Automation of cloud management processes

One of the advantages of AI-powered cloud solutions is the ability to quickly automate virtually any process. One example is the automation of application deployment – thanks to the use of the IaC (Infrastructure as Code) model, tools like Terraform or Ansible, and a CI/CD approach, you can automate application design processes in a short time. For example, Terraform can be used to define infrastructure, and Jenkins to automate the process of building, testing, and deploying applications. Another example of cloud management process automation is cost management automation. Thanks to tools such as AWS Cost Explorer or Azure Cost Management, you can automate cost optimization recommendations, which, combined with scripts to identify and shut down unused resources, can help reduce operating costs. Another example of cloud management process automation is using a tool like AWS Auto Scaling to automatically adjust the number of EC2 instances depending on the load. Also, using Kubernetes to automatically scale containerized applications can help reduce overall cloud resource usage, which can translate into lower costs and greater operational efficiency.

Security and access control for resources

Concerns related to security and access control for cloud resources are one of the most common headaches for companies using these types of solutions, but a multitude of tools and security measures make cloud platforms one of the most secure IT technologies. For example, access to sensitive data can be restricted by establishing roles and assigning them appropriate permissions based on the principle of least privilege. To further secure the environment, the IT team can require users to use multi-factor authentication. Data security in the cloud is also ensured by various encryption methods. One of them is encryption at rest, for which applications such as Azure Key Vault or Google Cloud KMS are used – they protect data stored on disks. In turn, data security in transit is ensured by, among others, TLS/SSL protocols. Cloud security also includes threat detection – solutions such as AWS GuardDuty or Azure Security Center are used for this purpose, but it must be remembered that even the best protection methods will be useless if the company does not have incident response plans. Important elements of cloud protection also include managing cloud resource configuration and scanning them for security vulnerabilities. One must also not forget the need to maintain user activity logs and conduct regular audits – in the case of cloud platform security, it is better to be safe than sorry, because early detection of threats is often cheaper than repairing the consequences of a failure.
