  • Lift and Shift is the simplest type of migration, where applications and data are moved without making changes to the architecture. This involves a lack of resource optimization and can generate high costs.
  • Replatforming means moving applications after adapting them to the specifics of the cloud platform, which forces the application to be adjusted to cloud conditions and also risks a loss of compatibility.
  • Rearchitecting involves moving applications to the cloud only after changing their architecture, which requires time, resources, and effort.
  • Rebuilding is simply using the cloud to create applications from scratch.

Equally important in preparing for cloud migration is choosing the right data transfer strategy. The simplest methods are transferring data on physical media (which increases transfer time) or sending it via the internet (which in turn depends on network bandwidth). The big bang method is also used, which involves moving all applications and data at once, but there is nothing stopping you from staging the migration. Regardless of the method and strategy, the migration process must be carefully planned and monitored.

Complex integration with existing systems and applications

Clouds have many advantages, but they also have drawbacks – one of the biggest problems during migration to a cloud platform is its integration with existing systems and applications. To avoid difficulties, it is worth conducting a thorough infrastructure analysis before integration to identify applications, services, and the dependencies between them. At the same time, it is good to use API standards – they facilitate integration between different systems. An effective way to solve problems with cloud and existing system integration is to use middleware tools such as Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) or Integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS) – they facilitate communication between applications. Moving to a microservices-based architecture or choosing a hybrid approach is equally effective. Do not forget about testing – integration tests ensure that applications communicate with each other correctly. Equally important is analyzing application and cloud performance using monitoring tools and event management systems. It is also worth remembering that even the best technologies will be useless if their users do not know how to use them, so it is good to invest in team training.

Security and data protection during migration

Data protection during migration is one of the most important issues when moving to the cloud. It is absolutely essential to use both encryption in transit (SSL/TLS) and at rest (data in storage). It is also worth using HTTPS protocols and data encryption techniques such as AES. At the same time, you should ensure data access through strict controls, role assignment, and the implementation of policies tailored to the company’s specifics. Another effective method for protecting data during migration is implementing security monitoring tools – they allow you to quickly detect irregularities and respond to threats. It is also important to implement a unified Identity and Access Management (IAM) system and two-factor authentication. A popular proverb says that better safe than sorry – in the case of cloud migration, this involves regularly scanning platforms for security vulnerabilities and keeping software and applications up to date. At the same time, it is good to develop an incident response plan. Data backup is equally important – regularly creating and testing backups not only allows for quick restoration in the event of a failure or ransomware attack but also enables ongoing verification of their currency.

Performance and application access issues after migration

Some problems during cloud migration are related to performance and application access. As a rule, this is associated with misestimating cloud resource needs, which can lead to either excessive load or underutilization of available resources. Bandwidth limitations can also affect application performance. To avoid such risks, it is worth regularly monitoring resource usage and configuring the network using a CDN (Content Delivery Network). Another problem is improper database adaptation to the cloud environment – this can lead to application slowdowns. To eliminate this problem, you should optimize queries and adjust the database configuration to the cloud environment. Differences in configuration between development and production environments can also lead to problems, so it is good to maintain uniform test and production environments. Difficulties can also start at the initial stages of migration. A wrong choice of data transfer strategy to the cloud can affect its performance, so it is worth thinking twice and considering all pros and cons to choose a strategy that takes into account data size, network bandwidth, and cloud service availability. Inefficient application code can also be problematic – it can negatively affect application performance in the cloud, so it is good to review it regularly and implement application performance monitoring tools. For solutions dependent on external services, it is good to use fallback strategies and asynchronous messaging to make them resilient to external service failures.

Managing costs and infrastructure maintenance after migration

Maintaining infrastructure after migration involves not only technical aspects but also cost management – it can be said that prices influence the success and profitability of the migration process just as much as technology. To keep them as low as possible, it is worth constantly monitoring them and optimizing resource usage. For this purpose, you can use, among other things, an appropriate payment model, such as resource reservations, or set up automatic scaling based on data usage. To reduce the costs of using a cloud platform, it is also worth planning the resource lifecycle so as not to pay for those that the organization does not use. Automating the resource lifecycle management process is useful for this. Equally important is managing data transfer costs between different cloud regions or locations by choosing appropriate cloud region locations or using data compression. It is also good to use cost modeling tools – they help forecast costs based on planned infrastructure changes. At the same time, it is worth tracking subscriptions, contracts, and commitments, and conducting periodic audits. This allows you to identify excesses and savings opportunities and adjust your cost strategy to the evolution of the organization.
